The fool on the hill is the piper at the gates of dawn

2022

56 x 76.5cm

Pen and ink on heavyweight Fabriano paper.

This was the title for my transfer paper for my PhD. at the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies (FAHACS) at the University of Leeds. The work is drawn from the same research practice which examines revivals of Nineteenth Century imagery in the 1960s, especially pseudo-medievalism of William Morris and the development of Art Nouveau as an articulation of psychedelic experiences.

The feathering that echoes marbling also signifies the identification with nature and with aspects of Native American culture and their use of the Peyote Cactus. Such psychedelics were experimented with by both US authorities and the US / UK counterculture.

I consider this to be an especially important piece in my lifetime of practice as an artist.
